Another Wal-Mart Class Action is Certified – Hours and Wages Violations
July 8th, 2007 by John CampbellWal-Mart (http://www.walmart.com/) has been sued in Missouri and many other states for allegedly forcing employees to work overtime without pay and encouraging employees to work through breaks and lunches while off the clock. A New Jersey Court recently certified a class of such employees in New Jersey. This came on the heels of decisions by Missouri and New Mexico courts to uphold the certification of similar classes. Although many of the recent cases which suggest violations of wage and hours laws have been brought against Wal-Mart, it is clear that the practice of trying to squeeze extra labor out of individual workers is not limited to just one retail giant. Many companies place pressure on hourly workers to work off the clock in order to get their work done while staying “on budget.” This is illegal.
