California researchers link autism and pesticides

According to the San Jose Mercury News, a just-released California Department of Health study found that pregnant women exposed to pesticides were up to six times more likely to give birth to a child with autism.  Nineteen pesticides were studied. It was determined that women living near cotton fields using pesticides with organochlorines had the highest risk of giving birth to a child with an autism disorder.

While the California Department of Public Health cautioned that the study does not prove a link, it said the results merit further research into the possible connection.
