The Nov. 26 story outlined the procedures lawyers should follow when representing clients involved in landfill litigation. The lawsuit currently pending against the owners of the Coyote Landfill near Navarre, Fla. was the lead example used in the article. The residents who live near the Coyote Landfill are represented by Hageman and Florida lawyer Kirk McCombs. The residents alleged the owners illegally dumped prohibited waste in the landfill that then started an underground fire and released dangerous levels of hydrogen sulfide into the air. The landfill was recently declared a public health hazard by the Florida Department of Health.
Even though landfills aren’t clean places, Hageman told reporter Bridget Heos, that doesn’t mean they have to be a nuisance. “If a landfill is handled properly, it’s not going to be pristine, but it’s not going to cause a whole neighborhood to stink,” Hageman said.
