Amusement park dangers
May 15th, 2008 by John SimonLast summer, the feet of a 13-year-old girl were severed when a cable on the Superman Tower of Power amusement ride snapped. As a recent article in Lawyers Weekly USA explains, the accident wasn’t an isolated one.
According to the last estimates compiled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 6,000 to 7,000 people each year seek emergency room treatment for amusement park injuries.
In “Amusement parks draw riders – and lawsuits,” reporter Dick Dahl notes that depsite a loophole that exempts the the amusement park industry from CSPC oversight, the agency gathered data on amusement park-related emergency room visits – at least for a while.
From 1997 - 2004, the agency uncovered approximately 60,000 emergency room visits. According to Kathy Fackler, the founder of a nonprofit consumer advocacy group Safer Parks, the CSPC stopped compiling the estimates in 2005 because of industry pressure.
As rides become more daring, the chances that riders will be injured increase. Injuries can range from bloody noses, broken bones, whiplash, brain injuries, paralysis and even death.
If you have sustained an injury or a loved one has suffered such an injury or died as a result of a dangerous or defective amusement ride, please contact John G. Simon toll free at 1-877-767-3108.
