Flimsy roofs linked to SUV rollover deaths

May 19th, 2008 by John Simon

When a sport utility vehicle rolls over in a crash, more than half of the people inside die, according to a recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The weaker the SUV’s roof, the more likely it was that someone would be killed, the study concluded.

The strongest roof was found on the 2000 to 2004 Nissan Xterra. When the roof of a 2000 Nissan Xterra was subjected to 10,000 pounds of force, the roof was crushed about two inches and the damage was barely visible. However, when a 2000 Ford Explorer received the same treatment, the roof caved 10 inches into the passenger compartment – before the 10,000 pound limit was reached.

Based on the results, the institute has urged the government to raise SUV roof standards.

The nonprofit consumer advocacy group Public Citizen applauded the study’s finding and joined the institute in urging the federal government to tighten roof strength standards.
