Elimination of dangerous trucking regulations put on hold

October 10th, 2007 by Dawn Mefford

September was supposed to bring to an end the dangerous regulations recently passed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that allowed trucking companies to require their drivers to be on the road for more hours on more days.  But now a U.S. Court of Appeals has pushed the deadline back to December 27, 2007.

As you can read in a recent posting on this blog, an appellate court threw out the new regulations in July because it found that the FMCSA instituted the new rules while ignoring its own studies that showed that the extended hours pose a higher risk to other drivers.  This July decision was to take effect this month, and would have meant that the previous, safer limits on driving hours would once again be the rule of the road.

But the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit said that a delay in the return of the old rules was necessary for the FMCSA to have time to respond to the July ruling
